How to Use Nicotine Pouches Properly (No Mess, No Burn)
Share
Important: Nicotine is an addictive substance. Nicotine pouches are not risk-free and are intended for adult users only (18+ in the UK). If you have any health concerns, speak to a healthcare professional before using nicotine products.
Nicotine pouches have become one of the most popular smoke-free nicotine options in the UK, and it's easy to see why. They're discreet, they don't produce any smoke or vapour, and they can be used almost anywhere: at a desk, on public transport, in a meeting. No smell, no fuss.
But if you've never used one before, the process isn't entirely obvious from looking at the can. And even people who've been using them for a while sometimes pick up habits early on that make the experience worse than it needs to be, such as placing the pouch in the wrong spot, leaving it in too long, or accidentally chewing it.
This guide walks through exactly how to use a nicotine pouch correctly, step by step, with notes on what to watch for and how to avoid the most common problems.
If you're completely new to nicotine pouches and haven't bought any yet, start with our beginners guide to understand which strength and brand to try first. For a comparison of pouch formats, see Regular, Slim, Mini: Types of Nicotine Pouches Explained.

Step-by-Step: How to Use a Nicotine Pouch
1. Wash your hands and open the can
Before handling any pouch, wash your hands. It sounds like a small detail, but nicotine pouches go in your mouth, and clean hands reduce the chance of transferring bacteria from whatever you've been touching beforehand.
Most nicotine pouch cans open with a simple press and pop on the lid. There's no twist or unlock mechanism. Some brands use a child-resistant top that requires pressing down and turning simultaneously, but the majority are a straightforward lift. Inside you'll find 20 to 22 pouches neatly arranged.
Notice the small compartment on the underside of the lid. This is the catch compartment for used pouches. Keep it in mind for Step 4.

2. Place the pouch between your upper lip and gum
Take one pouch from the can and place it between your upper lip and your gum. It goes at the top of the mouth, not the bottom. You can position it to the left, right, or centre. Most people find one side or the other more comfortable than directly at the front.
Tuck it in gently so it sits flat against your gum. You're not pressing it hard into place; it just needs to rest there securely. The pouch should feel comfortable. If it doesn't, adjust the position slightly.
Don't push it too far back. If the pouch is positioned toward the back of your mouth rather than toward the front, it becomes harder to keep in place and the experience is less comfortable. The ideal position is somewhere along the front half of the upper gum line.
Tip: Rotate the position slightly between pouches during the day. Keeping every pouch in exactly the same spot can cause mild gum irritation over time.

3. Leave it in for 20 to 40 minutes (and don't chew it)
Once the pouch is in place, leave it alone. You don't chew it, move it around, or press it with your tongue. Just let it sit. Within the first minute or two you'll notice the flavour coming through, followed by a tingling or slight warmth as the nicotine begins to absorb through the gum tissue.
The nicotine effect typically builds over the first five to ten minutes and then levels off. Most pouches last comfortably between 20 and 40 minutes before the flavour and effect start to fade. When that happens, it's ready to come out. You don't need to wait for a timer. Take it out when it feels spent.
The biggest mistake at this stage is chewing the pouch. It's a natural impulse, particularly for anyone who has chewed gum habitually. But nicotine pouches are not designed to be chewed. Chewing breaks down the pouch material faster than intended, floods your mouth with nicotine-saturated liquid, and increases the risk of swallowing the contents. At higher strengths especially, this can cause significant nausea.
A mild tingling sensation is completely normal and expected. A burning feeling is not. See the troubleshooting section below if that happens.
How long a pouch lasts also depends on the format. Dry mini pouches like ZYN release nicotine more slowly and tend to last longer than moist slim pouches. For a full breakdown, see: Dry vs Moist Nicotine Pouches: Which Type Suits You Better? and How Long Do Nicotine Pouches Last?
4. Remove and dispose of the pouch properly
When the pouch is spent, remove it with your fingers and place it in the catch compartment in the lid of the can. Most brands include this as standard. It's the small chamber on the underside of the lid, typically with a different coloured or frosted appearance. It's designed to hold a used pouch until you find a bin.
When you've used the full can and the catch compartment is full, empty everything into general household waste. Don't flush used pouches down the toilet. Don't leave them on surfaces where children or pets could reach them. Used pouches still contain nicotine residue and are toxic if ingested.
Many nicotine pouch cans are recyclable once emptied and rinsed, though this varies by brand. Check the packaging for guidance before putting the can in recycling.

Choosing the Right Strength Before You Start
How a pouch feels has a lot to do with whether the strength is right for your tolerance. Too strong and the tingling becomes an unpleasant burn, the nicotine effect is overwhelming, and nausea follows. Too mild and you don't get much out of it at all.
For most people who are new to nicotine pouches, the right starting point is somewhere between 2mg and 6mg per pouch. The table below shows how the UK market typically categorises strength:

Troubleshooting: Common Problems and How to Fix Them
A burning sensation under the lip
A mild tingle is normal. A genuine burning sensation isn't, and there are usually two causes.
The first is placement. If the pouch is positioned too far back or pressed directly onto a patch of gum rather than sitting between the lip and gum, it can create friction and irritation. Move the pouch slightly forward and make sure it's resting against the inner surface of the lip rather than grinding against the gum.
The second is strength. If the nicotine level is higher than your tolerance allows, the sensation from the nicotine release can feel more like burning than tingling. If this is happening regularly, drop down one strength tier and see if that resolves it. It usually does.
Try dropping to low-strength pouches if you're experiencing burning regularly.
Feeling nauseous or dizzy
This is almost always a strength issue. Remove the pouch immediately, get some fresh air, and drink some water. If it happens with a product you've used before without problems, check whether you've used multiple pouches in quick succession or used one on an empty stomach. Both increase how intensely you feel the nicotine. If it happens consistently with a particular strength, that strength is too high for you right now.
Recommended action: Switch to a lower strength. Try ZYN 3mg or Nordic Spirit 6mg.
The urge to chew the pouch
Very common, especially in the first few sessions. The instinct to chew something that's sitting in your mouth is hard to suppress at first. The practical answer is to stay aware of it for the first minute or two until the nicotine and flavour release settles. Once the pouch is doing its job, the urge to chew it tends to diminish. If you do accidentally bite down on it, remove it and use a fresh one. A broken pouch releases too much liquid too quickly and the experience won't be pleasant.
The pouch feels uncomfortable or keeps moving
Try a different position along the gum line. Most people have a preferred spot that becomes natural fairly quickly. Slim format pouches are generally more comfortable than regular-format ones for people who find the sensation intrusive. See our guide to pouch formats if you want to compare.
Mini format recommendation: ZYN Mini pouches are the smallest and most discreet format available.
The flavour or effect doesn't seem to be working
Two possible reasons: the strength is too low for your tolerance, or the pouches are past their best. Check the expiry date on the can. Nicotine pouches do expire, and an old can will have noticeably less flavour and nicotine kick than a fresh one. If the pouches are in date and you're consistently finding the effect too mild, you may be ready to step up to the next strength tier. Do it one tier at a time.
Ready to step up? Browse medium-strength pouches (6-10mg).
Nicotine Pouches vs Other Products
If you're coming to this from cigarettes, vaping, or snus, it's worth knowing that the experience is a bit different even if the nicotine level is broadly comparable.
With cigarettes, the nicotine hits very quickly after inhalation. With pouches, the absorption is slower and steadier, through the gum tissue over the course of 20 to 40 minutes. The first few days of switching can feel unsatisfying even at an equivalent nicotine dose because the delivery pattern is different. That adjustment period is normal and short-lived for most people. For a fuller comparison: Are Nicotine Pouches Safer Than Cigarettes?
Compared with vaping, pouches produce no vapour, have no inhalation component, and can be used in places where vaping is not appropriate. For snus vs pouches, the main distinction is that nicotine pouches are tobacco-free. See Snus vs Nicotine Pouches for a detailed breakdown.
